Bags2Mats for the Homeless looking for Volunteers
Volunteers have been making mats for the homeless in our nation for years. In 2019 Volunteer Delaware 50+ added the volunteer opportunity of crocheting plastic bags into mats for the homeless after being introduced to it by a volunteer in Sussex County. The new opportunity soon grew into an official program and in 2022 the program expanded into Kent and New Castle County.
Within this short time, Bags2Mats for the Homeless volunteers have collected plastics, prepared plarn (plastic yarn) and crocheted more than 638 mats statewide (2024). Each bags saving around 600 plastics bags from going to the landfill.
VOLUNTEER NEEDS:
Collect Plastics Volunteer – Assist program in bringing awareness to and collecting plastic material such as plastic bags, dry cleaning bags, and other soft plastics needed to make the mats.
PLARN Volunteer – Cut collected plastic material and assemble loops to create plarn for volunteers.
